Freemasonry Exposed and Explained
$7.00 $4.00

by William Morgan
originally published in 1889
paperback; 112 pages

The history behind this book is an intriguing chapter in the story of American Freemasonry. After leaving Freemasonry in 1826, Captain William Morgan of Batavia, New York and another former Mason, David C. Miller, announced plans to publish the secrets of the Lodge under the title, Illustrations of Masonry. Although such exposes were common in Europe, one had never been attempted in the United States. When news of the forthcoming book had spread throughout the Masonic community, both Morgan and Miller began to receive death threats and an attempt to burn down Miller's printshop occurred on 10 September 1826. The next evening, Morgan was arrested and incarcerated for an alleged debt to a local innkeeper from whom he had rented a room three months earlier. When the jailer was absent on the subsequent night, Nicholas Cheesboro, Master of the local Lodge, and two Masonic assistants presented themselves at the jail and persuaded the jailer's wife to release Morgan, which was done. Hearing a shrill whistle in the street outside, the woman rushed to the window in time to witness Morgan struggling with two men and then being pushed into a carriage and driven away into the night. He was never seen again. It is generally conceded that Morgan was kidnapped by Masons, but while the Masons themselves claimed that Morgan was taken to the Canadian border and paid to never return to this country, some members of the Batavia Lodge later confessed to having drowned him in the Niagara River. Morgan's disappearance and apparent murder sparked a moral crusade against Freemasonry and resulted in the formation of the Anti-Masonic Party which lasted from 1826-1843. A monument now stands in Morgan's honor in a Batavia cemetery. This book is a later edition of Morgan's original work and is an exact transcript of the ritual, oaths, and secret signs of each of the first seven degrees of "Ancient Masonry."
