by Nathan Lewis Rice
originally published in 1868
paperback; 168 pages

The doctrine of Divine foreordination (predestination) is perhaps the most misunderstood and misrepresented doctrine of the Reformed faith. It was said by John Wesley to make "all preaching vain," that it "tends to destroy that holiness which is the end of all the ordinances of God," "destroy our zeal for good works," and that it also has "a direct and manifest tendency to overthrow the whole Christian revelation." To the contrary, the author of this book shows, first, that the lives of those who have held to this doctrine have been characterized by eminent holiness and a profound evangelical zeal, and second, that it is clearly taught in the Scriptures. All who have been or who will be saved, owe their salvation to the purpose of God to bring them under the means of grace and to renew and sanctify their hearts; and they who are lost, will owe their ruin to their sin. This doctrine saves all that are saved, and injures none. It takes multitudes to heaven who would have perished; while those who are lost, perish on account of their sin.
